The Week That Should Terrify Every American Who Believes in a Free Press

By Radell Lewis | Host & Producer, Purple Political Breakdown | Alive Podcast Network
This past week may go down as one of the most consequential in modern American history — and the story most people are sleeping on isn't the one making the biggest headlines.
Yes, the United States and Israel launched a coordinated military assault on Iran codenamed Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion. Yes, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed alongside multiple members of Iran's security leadership. Yes, Iran retaliated by striking US military bases and Gulf state targets within hours. And yes, a girls' elementary school was hit, killing at least 53 students.
Yes, President Trump delivered a 108-minute State of the Union address filled with claims that don't survive basic fact-checking — from gas prices no state actually averages, to food stamp claims that really mean millions losing benefits, to prescription drug discounts that are "mathematically impossible" as stated.
But the story I want you to pay the most attention to? A single family aligned with the Trump administration is positioned to control CNN, CBS, HBO, HBO Max, two major film studios, and TikTok's US operations.
The Paramount-Warner Bros Merger: Follow the Power
On February 26, Netflix walked away from its $82.7 billion bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount's revised $31-per-share offer was declared the "superior proposal."
If this merger goes through, David Ellison — CEO of Paramount/Skydance and son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison — will control one of the most powerful media empires in American history.
This matters because:
The Ellison family is deeply aligned with the Trump administration. Larry Ellison is a major Trump donor. Oracle is a majority shareholder in the TikTok US deal. Trump himself publicly called them "friends of mine" and "big supporters" who will "do the right thing."
Trump stated it was "imperative that CNN be sold." He warned Netflix it would "pay the consequences" if it didn't comply with his demands, including firing board member Susan Rice. He purchased up to $2 million in Netflix and WBD stock. His DOJ fired the antitrust chief — who had bipartisan 78-19 confirmation support — just two weeks before Netflix dropped out.
Paramount's CEO attended Trump's State of the Union as Lindsey Graham's guest. Netflix's co-CEO visited the White House the same afternoon the company announced withdrawal. Republican Senator Mike Lee, who railed against the Netflix deal on antitrust grounds, called Netflix dropping out a "win for consumers" and conveniently canceled a planned hearing.
The Pattern We Should All Recognize
Consider what one political movement would control if this goes through:
Fox News (existing propaganda arm), CNN (acquired through this merger), CBS (already under Paramount/Ellison), TikTok US operations (Oracle/Ellison stake), Twitter/X (Elon Musk, aligned with Trump administration).
This isn't speculation. These are documented financial relationships and public statements.
When a small group of politically aligned individuals control the primary information channels that hundreds of millions of people consume daily, we have a word for that. It's not "free market." It's not "competition." It's consolidation of information power — and historically, it's one of the most reliable precursors to democratic erosion.
What's Standing in the Way?
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has signaled a "vigorous review" of the merger. Since much of Hollywood's production infrastructure is California-based, the state AG has significant leverage. Senate Democrats led by Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren are demanding answers about political interference. EU regulators also have jurisdiction.
But with the DOJ antitrust division now led by a former Trump White House official and the FCC under Trump appointee Brendan Carr, the federal guardrails are functionally gone.
The Iran Strikes Demand Scrutiny, Not Tribalism
I want to be clear about my position on the Iran strikes: I am not a fan of US adversaries obtaining nuclear weapons. There may have been legitimate national security justification for this operation. But several facts demand scrutiny:
The attack came one day after Iran's foreign minister announced a breakthrough in nuclear talks. Reports indicate Democratic officials were not informed beforehand. Both Trump and Netanyahu explicitly called for regime change. And Trump spent years promising "no new wars."
Suspending judgment until more information emerges isn't weakness. It's intellectual honesty.
The State of the Union Was a Masterclass in Misinformation
Every single major economic claim Trump made was either an exaggeration or an outright falsehood:
Inflation's major decline happened under Biden. No state averages below $2.30 for gas. The 2.4 million "lifted" from food stamps are people projected to lose benefits. The Trump account growth claim is off by a factor of nearly 17x. And you cannot have a price drop greater than 100% — that's not how math works.
If we can't even agree on basic arithmetic in a State of the Union address, we have a much bigger problem than partisan disagreement.
What Can You Actually Do?
Pay attention to media ownership. Support independent journalism. Demand that your elected officials — regardless of party — oppose unprecedented media consolidation. And when someone tells you this is about entertainment, remind them that CNN isn't a streaming show. It's a news network that shapes how millions of Americans understand their world.
I cover all of this in detail — with sources, fact-checks, and analysis — on this week's Purple Political Breakdown.
