Oil prices are surging toward $90 a barrel as the Strait of Hormuz becomes a flashpoint, threatening American wallets at the pump. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy lost 92,000 jobs in February the third month of losses in five as the labor market freezes up at the worst possible time.

Back home, Trump fired Kristi Noem as DHS Secretary after disastrous bipartisan hearings over the Minneapolis shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti, a $220 million ad scandal, and what lawmakers called a failure of leadership. Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin has been tapped to replace her. The Anthropic-Pentagon standoff over AI weapons and mass surveillance led to a federal government ban on the company's technology, while OpenAI swooped in with its own classified deal raising urgent questions about who controls AI in wartime.
