Roberts vs the White House Ballroom, Trump's Venezuela Oil Grab, and Iran Strikes Back

On Monday the Supreme Court let the President keep building a 400 million dollar ballroom on the White House grounds. It did not rule that the ballroom is legal. It ruled that the people who sued could not prove they were injured enough to be allowed through the door, and Chief Justice John Roberts dissented and called the project likely unlawful. Nobody has ruled on that question. Nobody may ever rule on it.

That is the thread running through this entire episode. The check still exists on paper. The question is whether anybody can actually reach it.

In Trump Corruption Watch, newly renamed because this beat covers a lot more than money: the Venezuela oil concession, where Trump announced majority US control of more than 65 billion barrels at what he called no cost to the American taxpayer. I break down the actual structure, a 100 year concession granted by an interim government the United States installed by force in January, with the US holding 55 percent of a joint venture whose private partner still has not been publicly named. Then the ballroom ruling and what standing doctrine actually means for every citizen lawsuit against the federal government. Then the final USPS mail ballot rule, the 24 state lawsuit, and a whistleblower disclosure released by Senator Blumenthal alleging the agency raced an untested ballot portal toward launch six weeks before the midterms. Then Pete Hegseth pulling at least 45 officers off Army promotion lists this year, more than half of them women or Black officers, and the Republican congressman who defended it by saying we serve at the goodwill of the President.

I also open with a correction from the August 26 show, because I got ahead of the evidence on the airport trademark story and that is on me.

In Nuanced News: the strike on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz and why Congress reached the war powers check twice, with Republicans crossing both times, and picked a vehicle that could not bind anything. The 50 percent Canada tariffs running on a 96 year old law no court has ever tested, because nobody can afford to sue. And a Seventh Circuit ruling almost every outlet flattened, where a federal judge told the Supreme Court he can see the problem and is not free to fix it.
