Every Promise Has a Receipt: What Washington Actually Cost You This Week
This week, a president promised you five thousand dollars, but only after the election. He promised a war ends, but only after the election. And the Supreme Court decided the rules of that election before a single vote was counted.
At the first ever Republican midterm convention, President Trump promised a five thousand dollar "Trump Dividend" to every adult citizen, conditioned on Republicans keeping the House and Senate. With roughly 250 million adult citizens, the payout would cost 1.2 to 1.3 trillion dollars. His own Speaker, Mike Johnson, said Congress would need to act. The funding explanation shifted from economic growth, to tariff revenue, to an unrealized Intel stock stake. Sixty three percent of voters polled called the offer inappropriate.
The same week, diesel hit an all time high of 6.31 dollars a gallon, up more than 70 percent year over year, as the Iran war widened into the Red Sea. Trump said the war will end "right after" the midterms. Iran's president said the country will never surrender.
And the Supreme Court blocked two separate attempts to reshape this year's elections: a new Postal Service mail ballot rule the administration's own lawyers offered no fraud evidence for, and a Missouri congressional map the state's own Supreme Court had already frozen. Both rulings came down before Election Day, with time still on the clock.
Meanwhile, a Bloomberg review found Trump or his money managers made nearly 28,700 securities trades in 17 months, more than every member of Congress combined, while he backs a bill banning congressional stock trading that exempts the presidency. The Government Accountability Office found DOGE spent 9.5 billion dollars paying federal employees not to work. Pennsylvania confirmed its fourth measles death this year, the first time the US has hit that number since 1992. And Homeland Security's own Inspector General confirmed detainees at the now closed Alligator Alcatraz facility were held in 18 square foot metal enclosures for up to two hours.
My take:
None of this is complicated once you follow the money and the timing. Republicans control the executive branch, the Supreme Court majority, and both chambers of Congress right now. If a 1.3 trillion dollar dividend were a real policy, it would not need to wait for an election. It needs the election, because it is not a policy, it is leverage. Same with the war end date. Same with the mail ballot rule the administration could not back up with a single piece of evidence. When the "outside managers handle Trump's trades" defense gets floated, remember that the president does not need to place an order himself to move a market. A tariff post does that for him. That is the actual conflict, and no amount of "he doesn't do it personally" changes it. This is not both sides. This is a record you can check, week after week, and this week's record is bad.
