An armed man forced his way through a crowd toward Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee for Ohio governor, while she spoke at the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Multiple people were knocked down. Patrick Havas, 38, of Canfield, was taken into custody and booked at the Mahoning County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and two counts of assault.
This is an emergency episode of Purple Political Breakdown, Ohio Edition. No script, no prep. I read the reporting as it stood, sourced it out loud, and gave my honest read of it in real time.
The law enforcement account. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Havas pushed through the crowd toward Acton carrying a taser and two pistols. The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office said two handguns and a set of brass knuckles were recovered after the arrest, and that no weapons were ever brandished or removed from their holsters. I read both statements out and flag where they do not line up.
The responses. Acton campaign communications director Addie Bullock said an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton and injured multiple people, and thanked law enforcement. Mahoning County Democratic Party chair Chris Anderson called it reprehensible and said it should be condemned by leaders on all sides. Governor Mike DeWine said he spoke with Acton that afternoon and that she wanted Ohioans to know she is okay. U.S. Senator Jon Husted called it an attempted attack and thanked law enforcement. Vivek Ramaswamy's campaign responded through communications director Connie Luck, who said candidates should be able to meet voters without worrying about threats or violence. I flag on air that the response came from the campaign rather than from the candidate in his own words, and that is my read, not a reported fact.
Who Patrick Havas is. Records reported by Newsweek describe him as a registered Republican and a licensed nurse with a 2008 disorderly conduct and petty theft case and old traffic offenses. No law enforcement agency has announced a motive.
The part everyone is passing around. TiffinOhio.net, with the Daily Beast reporting it independently, says Patrick Havas is the brother of Andrew Havas, the Republican operative who resigned as Jon Husted's Franklin County campaign chair in July after NBC News asked about a 2009 Mahoning County guilty plea, in which a sexual misconduct charge involving a 15 year old was reduced to misdemeanor assault. Andrew Havas gave more than $10,000 to Ramaswamy's campaign, and Acton had already criticized Ramaswamy publicly for keeping the money. I say plainly what this does and does not prove: there is no evidence that anyone directed this, and I am not going there.
Where I land. I condemn political violence against anyone, in every direction, without exception. I also cover the social media reaction, including posts attacking Acton's credibility rather than condemning what happened, and her first public remarks the day after.
